Lexington, Ky. – Contessa, owned by Club Contessa, an ownership group consisting of Gloria Callen, Densey Juvonen, Fernanda Kellog, and Kelly Morgan, was impressive all-around in her first CCI5*-L start, taking 14th overall at the 2023 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event at Kentucky Horse Park.
Boyd and Contessa, a 13-year-old Holsteiner mare (Contendor x Veritas, Esteban), finished 14th overall, after earning a 35.5 in the dressage phase, before producing an excellent cross-country trip around the challenging course, finishing with just 6.4 time. The pair added a single rail on the final day of competition to complete Contessa’s first CCI5*-L on a score of 46.7. Recovering well between phases, her heart and determination really showcased why she is a special mare in Boyd’s string. Contessa has been a part of the Windurra USA program since she was a five-year-old and continues to improve each year at the FEI level.
An unfortunate and early error during cros-country on Tsetserleg TSF, a 16-year-old Trakhener gelding owned by Christine, Tommie, and Thomas Turner, saw Boyd retire “Thomas” early on course with a planned reroute to Luhmuhlen in a few weeks’ time. The pair were sitting in sixth on a 28.3 following their dressage test.
